Kuusamo sits on Finland's eastern border, where GPS jamming is strong even though air traffic is sparse.
Kuusamo sits in eastern Finland near the Russian border, a forested tourism and forestry town with a ski-resort airport. It lies roughly 610 km from the Russian border east of the Gulf of Finland, the source referenced for the region's interference, and its proximity to the frontier places its airspace and freight routes within Finland's affected area.
Near-daily GPS interference over the Gulf of Finland has been reported by Finland and Estonia since 2022, drawing warnings from Finnish aviation authorities and, in 2024, disrupted airline approaches at eastern airports. Close to the border in eastern Finland, Kuusamo lies within the wider region where degraded satellite positioning has become a documented and recurring concern.
Kuusamo's economy rests on tourism and forestry, with a ski-resort airport and freight routes that depend on satellite navigation. Seasonal visitor flights and timber-hauling traffic both rely on accurate positioning, so interference across the region can complicate air operations and logistics, giving local operators near the border a genuine stake in stable GNSS.
